GIRL
[REDACTED]
PERSONAL PROJECT ANALYZING GIRL BOSS FEMINISM AND HUSTLE CULTURE
Girl [Redacted] is a risograph zine that defines, critiques and re-evaluates the topics of girlboss feminism and hustle culture with information pulled from interviews, surveys, and articles. Taking inspiration from 90s Riot Grrl zines, Girl [Redacted] utilizes hand-drawn elements that contrast against its more uniform body text as well as layered imagery.
DESCRIPTION
RESEARCH/BACKGROUND
I started my research by taking a survey regarding the topics of girl boss feminism and hustle culture (asked people how they would define them, how they feel, etc.). Then I interviewed two of the survey responders. After gathering information, I came up with a few personas based on my audience (young working people) and allowed this to inform my project going forward.
DIGITAL FLIP THROUGH
The topics of girl boss feminism and hustle culture are niche but culturally prevalent, especially among younger generations. While both topics have some potential benefits such as motivating people, especially women, to chase after what they want, both are also intrinsically linked to late-stage capitalism. The toxic and hypocritical ideals glorified by girl boss feminism and hustle culture are what I wanted to highlight in Girl [Redacted] and attempt to reframe and rethink.
